How to open a bank account in Portugal

okt 09, 2022

Opening a Portuguese bank account is probably not something you will do immediately when arriving in Portugal. But the longer you live in Portugal, the more you realise that a Portuguese bank account will make your Portuguese life much easier! In some restaurants or shop you can´t pay with a foreign bank card, even in a big city like Lisbon! And besides, the tax money can only be deposited on a Portuguese account. And you don’t want to miss that money, right?

I should have done it earlier but I kept putting it off, as administrative task in Portugal can drive you crazy! So.. I took a day off, prepared myself for the worse and what happened? Within two hours I walked out of the door with a big smile….and a Portuguese bank card!

Do you want to open a bank account in Portugal but have you no idea where to start? No worries! In this article, I will explain to you how to open a bank account in Portugal!

First of all, you have to choose a bank. I chose ActivoBank and most people have also opened a bank account here. My experience with ActivoBank has been very positive so far, so I definitely recommend opening an account at ActivoBank!

Why?

  • No membership fee:  Many banks require you to pay a fee every month or every year, like a  membership fee. With ActivoBank this is not the case! Of course, there are some services you have to pay for, e.g. urgent money transfers, but otherwise many services are free! I never had to pay anything.

  • Wide opening hours: Most ActivoBank locations are also open on Saturdays, which is super convenient if you work during the week! The opening hours are also very wide (10.00-20.00). Many banks in Portugal close at 15.00.

  • English speaking customer service and website: Very nice if you don't speak (good) Portuguese and you have a problem with your card.

ActivoBank is part of Millennium BCP, one of the largest private banks in Portugal. I have listed some other banks below for you with some information.

Bank ´membership´ fee? Opening hours
Novo Banco Yes (except the card for people aged 18-25) 8.30 – 15.00 closed on weekends
Caixa Geral de Depósitos Yes 8.30 – 15.00 closed on weekends
Banco CTT Yes 9.00 – 18.00 closed on weekends
Santander Yes 8.30 – 15.00 closed on weekends
BPI (Banco Português de Investimento) Yes 08:30–12:00 and 13:00–15:00 closed on weekends

As you can see, most banks are closed at 15.00. Of course, a location may have a different opening hours but generally you can stick to the times from this table. I didn´t check what the charges are for special bank activities so you should check this with your bank!

What do you need to open an account?

- ID / passport
- NIF
- CRUE
- Proof of address (in case your CRUE address is not correct)- Proof of income (e.g. your payslip)
- Deposit. Note; the amount can be quite high! I had to give 100 euros but it was because my employer at the time had a partnership with ActivoBank. I believe I had to give around 300 otherwise. You have to deposit the amount when you open your account and it will be in your new bank account afterwards. So it´s not like you have to pay the bank and lose your money.

Have you collected the documents? Then it's time to go to the bank and open an account!   Below, I explain what it was like when I went to ActivoBank.

  • Go to a location of your bank

I went to ActivoBank in the Vasco da Gama shopping centre in Oriente, Lisbon. Super friendly staff! Be aware that you have to sign a lot of documents, so it´s important you understand the documents or at least the translation of the employee.

  • Take a senha (ticket) and wait your turn

At my location, I was able to do this through a QR code.

  • Give your documents to the employee

The employee will check it first and then it will be sent to a higher department for approval. This took about 20 minutes in my case. When the called me again, I just had to check the documents and sign it.

  • Give the deposit

You have to transfer the deposit money (to your new Portuguese account) or you can give it directly in cash so it will be deposited into your account.

  • Activate your card

As soon as the money is deposited, your account is active! I received my bank card immediately and only had to activate it myself by withdrawing money somewhere.

The bank card is a Visa card. You can also request a credit card if you would like to.

Good luck!

Marriage; some have dreamed about it since childhood, while others have no particular interest in it. Personally, I lean more towards the first category, so when my boyfriend proposed to be last year, I said a wholehearted yes! What I didn't know then was that by saying yes to my true love, I was also saying yes to application forms, emails to institutions I had never heard of and countless phone calls to Dutch, French, and Portuguese authorities. Fortunately, everything eventually fell into place, and on July 27th, o noivo and I exchanged our vows! Having spent almost a year gathering all the necessary documents, I can now consider myself an expert in this area. Therefore, I'd love to share my experience with you in this article, so that the preparations for your wedding in Portugal, as a non-Portuguese, will be much easier!

Four years ago I moved to Portugal ´for a year.´ Well that year is taking a bit longer... 😉 This milestone had to be celebrated and it´s what I did by renewing my Portuguese transport card. There are nicer things to do, but since I travel daily on public transport, this was important! In this article, I´ll explain what the personal transport card is and how to get or renew it.

In September, it was announced that the Portuguese government would give a €125 to residents in Portugal due to inflation. Families would also receive an amount of 50 euros per child living at home. There was confusion for many people, including myself; would it be only for residents in Portugal with Portuguese nationality or also for residents without Portuguese nationality? By now, we know more! The government has even started paying for it. In this article, I'll tell you more about it!
