Bacalhau à brás…
…and a glass of Port…..
….with fado in the background!
Do you have no idea what i´m talking about? Then this is the place to be! I welcome you to my website, which is about Portugal and about what it´s like to live abroad.
Did it ring a bell because you know better than anyone else what it´s like to visit a Portuguese restaurant? Maybe because you visit Portugal often or because you live here. In both cases, keep staying on this site because I guaranteer you to find a bunch of recognisable things and useful information.
Portugal is located in Southwest Europe and has over ten million inhabitants. Since November 2018, I am one of them! Via this website I will take you along to my daily life in Portugal (especially life in Lisbon) and I will post articles about all kinds of things you have to think about when you have moved to another country. Therefore, not only useful for people who are interested in Portugal or who are living here, but also for those who live abroad or have plans to emigrate.
And then of course the question: why Portugal?
Well, I could write a story about how Portugal stole my heart years ago and that it had always been my dream to live here. But let´s stay close to the truth: I was looking for a job in a sunny country…ASAP! Since I was receiving almost everyday the same adverstisement about a job in Lisbon, I decided to go to Portugal (and actually also because I had no savings left to move to Australia, which was my orginal plan).
So, on the internet I found THE job of my life: customer service representative in Lisbon. And that, FYI, was sarcasm ;). After some interviews, I took a plane to Lisbon to start a new adventure.
It certainly became an adventure. I, as a non-technical person, started to work at the customer service for a Dutch company which sells domestic appliances.
My task was to offer technical support by phone to people who had problems with their domestic appliances. And when I say problems, I´m talking about real problems: a vacuum cleaner which lost suction (the device was 5 years old and the filter had never been cleaned), a saver that doesn´t shave (I received a picture of a dirty comb full of hair) or a coffee machine that doesn´t make a good cup of coffee (I never knew but obviously coffee is a prime necessity of life).
It certainly wasn't my dream job, but in the meantime I was able to live in the this amazing city: Lisbon! And it gave me the change to meet all kinds of people who had moved to Portugal from the Netherlands or other countries. And I liked it so much that, more than three years later, I am still living there! Meanwhile I work for another company and I live with my French boyfriend in Alfama, the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon.
Even though I had a very nice life in the Netherlands and have my wonderful family and friends there, I don´t even want to think about living again in the Netherlands. Still, living in Portugal is not all sunshine and roses. Some things are just a lot harder in another country with another language than in your own familiar surroundings.
Enough reasons to make a website and start blogging! Tips, experiences and information: you will find it all here! You can also find a personal blog where I will write about my daily life in Portugal! I hope this website will help you with your visit or even with your life in Portugal/another country.
If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know! I would love hearing from you 😊

Annemijn
